Animal Law
Chris is one of the few attorneys who regularly handles cases involving animals. Animal Law is not really a practice area on its own -- it refers to the special issues that arise whenever a case involves an animal. Animal Law cases include custody disputes, dog bites, injured pets, leash law violations, and veterinary malpractice, among others.
The difference between Animal Law and other areas of law is that it requires an understanding of how animals interact with and are treated by humans, and by extension the legal system. Much of Animal Law comes from property law, as animals are considered property by the legal system. Unlike other property, though, animals are alive, sentient, and mobile -- and this can make it difficult to apply property rules. To successfully handle an Animal Law case, you must keep in mind the special nature of animals as property, and be creative in applying property law rules.
